Rally of Discovery - From 1994 to Present
Hi, my name is Philip Gunn, and in 1994, me and some of my friends, Liam Sheehan , Maurice Reid, Barth Buckley, and others had an idea for a pleasant motorcycle adventure holiday in Ireland which we decided to call the Rally of Discovery. We wanted the riders to feel really involved in the ride and to explore the terrain in more depth than they would if they were just touring around. We hoped that this kind of tour would increase the riders’ pleasure and satisfaction because some of the riding would be quite challenging and also because it would include map reading, exploring and interacting with the natives in order to get the answers to some of the clues.
The event has always had a strong social side to it and every evening, when the day’s results are published, there has always been plenty of good-natured banter and fun comparing stories of the journeys and routes involved in getting to each overnight stop, culminating in a craic-filled award ceremony at the end of the week or weekend.
My hope for this site is for it to become a record of what has gone before, and to advertise upcoming ROD “Rally of Discovery” events.
The building of this site will take some time, but if you have taken part in the past we would like to hear some of your stories and if you have any pictures they will also help to describe and explain the saga of The Rallies of Discovery.
